How To Correct Mistakes In Your Report

All of you applying for credit know how crucial you credit report can be? Your credit report can either get you credit, or if it contains certain unwanted reports, you can also lose the opportunity of getting credit. It may happen at times that your credit report contains mistakes, i.e, they contain facts that are untrue. These mistakes can easily hurt your chances of getting credit approved. You should know how to correct mistakes in your credit report, and we will tell you how to go about it.

Prevention is better than cure. Check your credit report after every seven years to see if it does not consists of mistakes. If you are watching your credit report for the first time then you may problems understanding certain things. Be free to ask the credit bureau about it; it is your right. If you see there are mistakes in the credit report you can take action against the credit bureau under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), which was issued by the federal law.

Once you have identified the nature of mistakes you can call the credit bureaus. The three major credit bureaus are Experian, Trans Union Corporation and Equifax. Their addresses are:

Trans Union Corp. - P. O. Box 1000, Chester, PA 19022
Equifax - P. O. Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374

Then you can send a written letter to the credit bureau and bring the mistakes to their notice. The credit bureau will have to investigate the mistakes and errors, and if convinced with the errors, the credit bureau shall correct the mistakes or make required deletions. On your request, the credit bureau can also send the new credit report to the creditors you have applied to in the recent past. Some credit bureaus may also charge for this service. Once the mistakes are corrected, you have a neat credit report and can optimistically apply for credit.

However, if the credit bureau is not convinced that there needs to be any correction in your credit report, you can write a letter them explaining them of the mistakes in the credit report. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), the credit bureau will be sending that letter to the creditor who asks for your credit report.
